A Note from Anne

Hi everyone, below is a lovely note regarding our recent 350 event, as well as details of events and initiatives happening in Monteseel.
Thanks Anne!

Hello Everyone

*350.org Moving Planet 27 August 2011 *

Twenty nine Monteseelians, from babies in prams to grannies, gathered
at the park for this event. We had a 75% turn out from Monty’s Edge-
that is community spirit. Cora drew blue arrows (the symbol of the 350
organisation) on squares of cardboard so that everyone could have a
“necklace”. Sylvia and Rosalie agreed to lead the group and we set
off with prams, bikes and on foot, up Magdelene Avenue on a route
around the perimeter on Monteseel. The leaders set a pace that
initially even left the bikes behind!!! Those of us who are less fit
returned to the park as we, or our little ones, got tired. I saw 5
bikes complete the whole route, and four adults and two young ones
completed it on foot. Thank you everyone, I think we all had fun. Next
year we must try to combine this event with National Braai Day.

At the July Neighbourhood Watch meeting a number of people agreed to
help with the R250 per week funding for the ladies who are clearing
around the Park.If there is anyone else who would like to help with this
please let me know and I will add you to the list.

We have put aside the last Saturday of the month for Monteseel
activities. The verges around the Police station, where we have been
working, are looking great. There are two more Saturdays before the
end of the year- send your gardener or join us yourself, even if it is
just for a chat! Roy and his gardener have also been tackling the Carl
Street entrance – Thanks Roy.

29 October Work Party to continue at police station or security
entrances.

Letter from Michael

Hi All
Please make it to the meeting on Tuesday 18 January 6pm, at no1 Grand Boulevard. Although this is not a general meeting, everyone who lives here and has constructive input is welcome.
Thanks to the musketeers who have spontaneously been making headway on the park.

An agenda to contemplate:

·         No reported crimes/ break-ins or near misses in Monteseel. The CPF seem set to organize a petition for another vehicle for the SAP.
·         What and when to do actions in the park. Clint, Benji (our new treasurer) and James have been working there a lot. What do we want to have ready for winter?
·         A submission to the Mountain Club of South Africa to use the vacant clubhouse, mainly as a venue for the home schooling kids and facilities during park events.
·         Sylvia, as a rate payer, has been on to Oswald Mnguni mngunio@durban.gov.za] at the municipality to grade our roads.
·         The cycad was hit again sometime after new year. We found saw cut fronds left over from a sucker removal.
·         Submit our application to become a registered conservancy (please find copy attached for comment)
·         Last meetings minutes are also attached

See you then.

Hi there fellow Monteseeler

There are a few really wonderful community initiatives happening in Monteseel at the moment, the conservancy, the playgroup teas, drumming circles and of course where it all began the neighbourhood watch. And while these efforts have been integral in creating a sense of community which sadly was lacking in our area, I feel that a reliable form of communication between residents is still needed.
I would therefore like to offer to host a community blog, this blog would be run by the community, for the community and would cover local news and events, crafts, businesses, any issues or topics that you feel are relevant.
We are all so privileged to live in an amazing area, many of us can safely say we would not want to live anywhere else!  Please share your thoughts on what living in Monteseel means for you, what you would like to see happening here.
I would also love to receive photos that you would like to post and will be running a competition for the prized header photo. So get snapping! To be included in the competition please email me your pics by 28 Feb 2011.
